CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Simone runs over to her bowl of water, wagging her tail frantically, when we get back to the loft. I sink my body into the couch, clutching one of the decorative cushions with the red African women printed on them.

The iron mask mounted on the wall looks down at me like it’s about to speak to me. Maybe it can give me advice on my next moves.

I hear my phone buzzing in my pocket again. This time it’s Caitríona.

“Yeah,” I say.

“How did it go with the Sammy Jenkins fella?” She sounds out of breath.

“Who?”

“Don’t tell me you haven’t done the job yet?”

“Oh, Sammy. Yes. I’ll be paying him a visit this afternoon.”

“You better, because if you don’t, I’m giving the job to somebody else. When you’re done with him meet me at the criminal courts later on at five.” Caitríona hangs up without saying goodbye.

I pack up my fanny pack with a fully charged mobile phone, sunglasses, leather gloves, keys, headphones, cash, and notebook. I then use a bike pump for my tires. I have a busy day ahead of me. I rub the freshly clean dog one more time on the neck.

“I’ll be back later.” I kiss the top of her head. The dog licks my cheek. “Ye little devil.”
